Alicia Harvey introduces you to the different types of texturizing methods available to the acrylic artist today. Topics include paper texturizing in underpainting - as shown in much of Jacqui Beck's work - or as collage, and texturizing with selected GOLDEN Acrylic gels and grounds. After this demo, you will understand the basics of these products, the appropriate surfaces on which to use them, and their appearance in relation to acrylic paint.

If you have ever stood in front of our GOLDEN Gels and Mediums display at our Seattle and Bellevue DANIEL SMITH Stores and wondered (or been confused) as to what to try, this is a great way to find out more about them from Alicia!

This two day watercolor workshop with Stella Canfield is all about YOU!

Stella will help you to develop your own creative process and finishing a painting every day (if not two!). From sketching to design, color, light and techniques until applying emotion, brush strokes, and final touches, Stella will be there for you through the entire day, making sure you feel comfortable and confident with your process.

You will find all about Stella’s process, her calling the “Muse” and fitting her art into the busy dynamic of the daily life. She is a working artist, mother of four, wife and a friend, active member of society and a volunteer, keeping up with life on two continents, America and Europe. Her energy is contagious and her passion for life and art is admirable.

The class will start with a fast demo and the rest of the day will be dedicated to YOU and YOUR process. Plan on working hard and having fun at the same time. The challenge you will overcome will be leaving the worries and limits behind and “get into the Zone”. You will free yourself of the pressure and judgment and enjoy the creative process as we create for no one else but ourselves. There are no limits to creation!

She will go through the entire process of her creating the painting to the final execution revealing all her secrets. Stella will talk about sketching, design and color choices, light, techniques as well as choosing a subject while applying it on paper and finishing a painting.

You will learn how she achieves the looseness and boldness of her watercolors as well as interweaving the deep emotions she feels toward her subjects. You will leave the two demos feeling more confident and enthusiastic about your own work and eager to hold the brush in your hand.

Bring drawing materials & piece of fruit to draw with during the second hour in this FREE 2 hour mini-workshop with Michael.

This FREE 2 hour demo, or mini-workshops will cover the basics of drawing from life. Still life, landscapes, figures, portraits, the principles are all the same. The demos will focus on the very basics of learning to see and then learning to interpret and design in drawings. It will cover procedure, values, edges, simplification and design, and measuring.

The first hour, Michael will demo the very basics and lay them out in a simple way.
In the second hour of the demo or mini-workshop, you will be drawing fruit (please bring your favorite to draw from) and you’ll have the opportunity to apply the new information. Michael will come around and help everyone for the remaining 45 minutes or so. This demo or mini-workshop is a great chance to begin with the fundamentals or to catch up if you've already got some working knowledge.

Please bring materials to draw with and a piece of your favorite fruit. Daniel Smith will also have supplies on hand available for purchase.

Do you love drawings? Do you want to draw what you love? Here is an opportunity to learn and practice the basics of drawing – or improve your drawing skills – in a supportive class environment.

Mary Shea teaches a drawing class for adults that is appropriate for beginners as well as people with some drawing experience who want additional instruction and practice. Every week there are different exercises focusing on the basic drawing elements: line, value, shape, space, and fun.

This 6 week session Mary will focus a lot on composition and ways to construct pathways through your drawings. You'll be working with pencil, charcoal, ink, and seeing how the materials affect compositional choices.

Experiment with this spontaneous and painterly method of printmaking combined with painting and collage to create mixed media artwork. Each monotype is a unique print, and the plate can be used over and over. Students will learn additive, subtractive, and drawing transfer techniques. Working with small plates, water-soluble inks, and a portable etching press, artists will explore the materials and tools to produce a series of monotypes. Beginning and experienced artists enjoy this medium.

Art Framing 101 with Expert Framer Anita East at this FREE demo, learn (or review) basics of assembling a frame kit, forming an art package, and securing package to a frame using a framer's point gun. Learn to install dust jacket and quality hanging hardware, and how to select quality framing materials from a conservation standpoint.

At the demo, Anita will frame 1 standard art package into Artcare Frame Package, 1 prestretched canvas into a frame.

Materials Anita will be demonstrating:

Framer's point gun and points, wood and metal frame kits, pre-cut mats and backing, Lineco tapes and glue to include frame sealing tape, rabbet foam tape, linen and paper hinging tapes, PVC glue, 3M ATG tape, acrylic sealing medium such as GAC 100, hanging hardware, Kraft Paper or acid-free backing paper, Bump-Ons, sanding block, archival quality ArtCare systems, cotton gloves, boning tool.

Additional tools and supplies Anita will be using:

Don is a working artist for Faber-Castell and will be sharing tips and tales about his experiences as an Urban Sketcher at his demonstration. At his demo last year Don, entertained everyone who came with his stories and adventures as he shared tips for using Pitt Pens and other great artist tools, from Faber-Castell.

This FREE demo or mini-workshop with Michael, will cover the basics of drawing from life. Still life, landscapes, figures, portraits, the principles are all the same.

The demo will focus on the very basics of learning to see and then learning to interpret and design in drawings. It will cover procedure, values, edges, simplification and design, and measuring.

The first half of this demo or mini-workshop, Michael will demonstrate the very basics and lay them out in a simple way.

In the second half of the demo or mini-workshop, you will be drawing fruit (please bring your favorite) and you’ll have the opportunity to apply the new information. Michael will come around and help everyone for the remaining 45 minutes or so.

Natalie Oswald lets her materials inspire creativity in her paintings of flora and fauna. Working with a combination of mediums can produce exciting and intriguing results, Watch while Natalie guides you through the process of exploring water based materials to generate ideas, new techniques and "happy accidents". During this demo, she'll share her favorite tips and products to avoid the common pitfalls of combining watermedia. Working on panels, she'll prepare the surface to accept watercolor, gouache, ink, acrylic and more without beading or lifting. As the painting progresses she'll show methods for working loose and for adding detail, and discuss inclusions such as collage and gold leaf.

This demo is for all levels and should help you develop your work by eliminating unnecessary details, concentrate on values and simplifying shapes. Ron will show you his process of quick thumbnail value sketches that capture the essence of your subject as well as small color studies that pin point the focal area of your painting and connect small medium and large shapes.

“Whether you’re on location or in your studio keeping a sketchbook allows me the freedom to capture elements for future paintings or just try out new ideas and it has been the my most valuable artistic tool for the last 20 years.”

For those artist’s who are interested in keeping a travel journal, this is the perfect demo for you. Ron has been keeping a watercolor journal for the last 20 years and has documented all of his travels from Mexico, United States and Europe. You can see how Ron develops a painting from sketch to finished painting in the June issue of Watercolor Artist Magazine.

During the demo Ron will be using:

Sketchbook: Aquabee Super Deluxe for watercolor is what Ron uses.
Limited Watercolor palette: yellow ocher, ultramarine blue, alizarin crimson, sap green and burnt sienna.

There will be time to follow along with Ron during his demo, so, it you like, please feel free to bring to the demo:

Sketchbook (the Aquabee Super Deluxe for watercolor is available at the store)
Watercolor palette: small palettes or travel palettes are fine
Brushes: bring any brushes you may have. Remember you will be working in a sketchbook, and the paintings will be small in scale.
Colors: A limited palette is fine yellow ocher, ultramarine blue, alizarin crimson, sap green and burnt sienna are the colors Ron will use.
Misc: water container, household sponge, pencil.

This is a great opportunity to learn and, it you like, work along with Ron while he demonstrates and shares tips that will help you with your own work!

At this FREE demo, Linda Hansen will be demonstrating some of our new Mixed Media products from C&T publishing: Transfer Artist Paper (TAP) and Lutradur®. Linda will be showing how these are used and sharing tips and lots of different creative ideas.

"Flat to Wow"

Take your art from flat to wow with surface design techniques and tools from C&T Publishing. The emphasis will be on using Lutradur® and TAP, Transfer Artist Paper, but other tools and supplies with be briefly covered too. These techniques are featured in the book, Jane Dávila's "Surface Design Essentials". Linda will also talk about two great books by Lesley Riley: "Fabulous Fabric Art with Lutradur" , and "Create with Transfer Artist Paper" that explore more creative ideas using those supplies.

2 foam brushes and several smaller bristle brushes to use with acrylic paints

Several large and several small recycled yogurt-type containers for water
Paper towels
1–2 yards plain white fabric—bleached muslin is fine

Rubber stamps (large designs work better than small, intricate ones)

FREE Urban Art demonstration of Montana 94 Spray Paints and various Montana nozzles with Derek Wu, while he paints a large scale portrait. Watch as Derek shows you how to paint clean lines and transition colors with our Montana 94 Spray Paints.

This demo is from 10 to 2, with Derek doing a complete large scale painting from start to finish. Please feel free to come and go anytime during the 4 hour demo. Derek will be answering questions while he paints and demonstrates. Because there are aerosol fumes, this is an outdoor demo taking place near the DANIEL SMITH Store entrance, so be sure to dress for whatever weather we have that day!

“Most will agree that measurements and proportions are keys to creating successful portraits. However, many portrait artists are successful in producing accurate likenesses but often the paint of r drawing lacks emotional content that engages the viewer. After having done hundreds of portraits, I became bored with producing technically correct paintings so I began to experiment to make things more interesting. At my August 7th Demo, I will introduce several ideas and techniques that should make your portrait artworks more interesting and hopefully cause a viewer to spend more time studying your artwork. I will introduce:

a.) Several ways to start portrait painting.
b.) How to capture “emotional moments using a model or when photographing interesting subjects.
c.) How to use different mediums to create interesting textures and moods.
d.) Incorporating the “Less is more” strategy.
e.) Distorting images.

The Artist

Artists that inspire me to seek an expressive difference are Alex Powers, Di Vinci, Bill Evens, Carol Carter, Guy Denning, to name a few. I will be using inks, watercolor, gouache, acrylics, pastels, Mylar, and watercolor paper. In other words, I will be using any material that will produce the effect I am envision at the time. My approach often frees me up to be more expressive, more right brained and spontaneous. I let the painting tell me which way to go rather than forcing it to some preconceived standard.”

This workshop allows you to digitally play with images. During the first half, learn how to use Golden Digital Printing Grounds to print altered images onto unconventional surfaces, like handmade paper, fabric, and acrylic skins. During the second half, incorporate either your printed image(s) or ready-made image(s) from Alicia onto canvas or cradleboard and further alter them with acrylic paint and gel media.

Collage Artist Ilvs Strauss will present a solid definition of what a collage is to empower people to explore the range of possibilities that this medium offers. Collage is a simple and accessible form of art that is capable of conveying powerful stories through the use of seemingly disparate components. Because it can be made of materials readily available (magazine cut outs, glue, photos, dry leaves), and the technique (cutting and pasting) is easily mastered, collage allows for greater exploration with compositional elements of art as well as greater freedom for creative expression ie fun! Collages can be a great way to creatively catalogue old photos, create original, inspirational pieces and to discover greater meaning in the images you are drawn to.

FREE Mask Making Demo with Roger Wheeler - Making a Papier Mache Cheetah Mask

Roger Wheeler who makes fabulous masks (including masks for the Fremont Solstice Parade) will be demonstrating how he makes his mask/sculpture creations in papier mache at two FREE demos on Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at 11am and again at 1:45pm.

At the demo Roger will be making his Cheetah Mask and you will learn how as he demonstrates these steps:
1. Forming the subject in modeling clay on a hard hat, in this case a cheetah.
2. Layering recycled paper strips on top of the clay with DS wheat paste.
3. Showing what the subject looks like dry and off the mold and covered with Daniel Smith gesso.
4. Showing the end result after having been decorated and painted with Daniel Smith acrylics and varnish. And maybe sharing some thoughts about how it might be used in a performance.
