Workshop participants will learn how to interpret and transform the Western perspective of looking at still life settings into an Asian style of painting. Settings of fruits and vegetables and flower arrangements will be provided.
Using the Sumi perspective, the basics of Asian art arrangement, composition, color treatment and other aesthetic approaches to express value, light and shadow for example, participants will paint, will perhaps learn to paint differently than in the past.
Two different types of rice paper (raw-absorbent and sized) will be used to teach how differently water reacts to create special effects on different papers. Sumi brush strokes and techniques will be emphasized. Throughout the workshop, comparisons between Oriental/Asian Sumi and Western/European art will be discussed. Ideas presented in the May 8th demo will be expanded on--including Sumi material use and the tradition of chop use.
