Sunday, May 27th, 2012
at 12 pm & 2 pm - FREE demo!

Rich, buttery, timeless. Oil painting may be the most beautiful of all painting media, and it has been the choice of masters since the 15th century. Even today, there is no rival for its versatility and depth of color.
It's a powerful medium, and oils can be a bit intimidating, but a little knowledge can greatly improve your work and save you a lot of money in materials. At the demo Jamie will go over the basic materials needed to get started painting with oils, and how they are used.

The FREE demo is a great preview to Jamie’s Workshop in June:
Basics of Getting Started with Oil Painting with Jamie Bollenbach
Sunday, June 10, 2012
11 am to 4 pm
Space is limited for the workshop so please register early by calling the Seattle Store at:
This workshop will give you a solid, basic start to answer your questions about oils:
What is fat over lean? Wet-on-wet or wet-on-dry? How do you glaze, or varnish? What kind of brushes? This color and this color look identical- why do they mix so differently? What is all this stuff: Damar varnish? Odorless Spirits? Cold-Pressed Linseed Oil? Cobalt Dryer? Venetian Turpentine? If you have always wanted to paint with oils but did not know how to get started, Seattle Artist Jamie Bollenbach will teach you the key basics of painting with oils: the right supplies, how to apply them, basic color mixing, studio prep, safety and clean up. You will learn about pigments, brushes, mediums, vehicles, varnishes, gesso, setting up a palette, and how drawing integrates with an oil painting. You will learn about the different substrates you can paint on with oils, like canvas, linen, hardboard panel, and even metal and paper as well as basic safety and care for your materials and equipment.
Finally, you’ll be painting a very simple oil painting to get a feel for this wonderful medium. Mr. Bollenbach, M.F.A., will distill 15 years of art teaching experience with schools like the University of Washington and the Northwest College of Art into the key concepts for you to begin painting in oils.
