This workshop allows you to digitally play with images. During the first half, learn how to use Golden Digital Printing Grounds to print altered images onto unconventional surfaces, like handmade paper, fabric, and acrylic skins. During the second half, incorporate either your printed image(s) or ready-made image(s) from Alicia onto canvas or cradleboard and further alter them with acrylic paint and gel media.

Basic understanding of computers, including Adobe Photoshop Elements, required. Instructor laptop and Epson Photo Stylus R1800 printer available to help those without laptops. All images are printed on instructor's printer.

“Think of this as a crash course in the fundamentals of drawing from life. Bring a piece of fruit and something to draw with (charcoal or graphite with a sketchpad, as an example). I'm going to demo, then help you work through the basics of procedure, measuring, simplification, values, and design. It's a crash course designed for the absolute beginner as well as the intermediate artist who wants to push their life drawing skills to the next level. The masters know that they don't know any particular trick, they know the fundamentals so well that it looks like they know a trick. My goal is to teach some basics to take home and practice, in just 2 hours. It's a great place to start or a great place to launch onward.”

FREE Mixed Media “Hands On” Collaging Demo with Ilvs Strauss

We are hosting a FREE “Hands On” Collaging Demo with Ilvs Strauss on Saturday, July 16th, 2011 at 11am & 1:45pm.

Collage Artist Ilvs Strauss will present a solid definition of what a collage is to empower people to explore the range of possibilities that this medium offers. Collage is a simple and accessible form of art that is capable of conveying powerful stories through the use of seemingly disparate components. Because it can be made of materials readily available (magazine cut outs, glue, photos, dry leaves), and the technique (cutting and pasting) is easily mastered, collage allows for greater exploration with compositional elements of art as well as greater freedom for creative expression ie fun! Collages can be a great way to creatively catalogue old photos, create original, inspirational pieces and to discover greater meaning in the images you are drawn to.

This is a Special “Hands On” FREE demo so come prepared do some actual collaging. Basic materials will be provided, though please feel free to bring magazines (or other items) that have images that appeal to you so that you can make a more personal collage!

Rita will show you the materials you would use, like our new Dye-N-Flow paint-able fabric dyes (part of our new Fabric Arts Supplies from Jacquard) and Mona Lisa Gold Leaf, and how to use them on silk. She will also share ideas on how you can design your own painted silk pieces.

Encaustic Basics: Introduction to Materials & Techniques with Hamid Zavareei

Learn how to create luminous layers of color and intriguing depth in painting by using wax as your binder. Hamid Zavareei, a Gage Academy of Art Instructor, will show simple applications of encaustic wax and discuss how to work with wax, pigment and oil paint together. He will demonstrate how to create a piece by layering wax, embedding images, transferring images, creating texture, drawing into wax and incising.
If you have ever wondered about encaustic and how to work with it, Hamid will give you a great introduction in this FREE demo!

FREE Mask Making Demo with Roger Wheeler - Making a Papier Mache Cheetah Mask

Roger Wheeler who makes fabulous masks (including masks for the Fremont Solstice Parade) will be demonstrating how he makes his mask/sculpture creations in papier mache at two FREE demos on Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at 11am and again at 1:45pm.

At the demo Roger will be making his Cheetah Mask and you will learn how as he demonstrates these steps:
1. Forming the subject in modeling clay on a hard hat, in this case a cheetah.
2. Layering recycled paper strips on top of the clay with DS wheat paste.
3. Showing what the subject looks like dry and off the mold and covered with Daniel Smith gesso.
4. Showing the end result after having been decorated and painted with Daniel Smith acrylics and varnish. And maybe sharing some thoughts about how it might be used in a performance.
