First Thursday Recap

I visited as many galleries and artist studios as I could last Pioneer Square First Thursday sharing goodies with Artists. The whole evening was a re-affirmation that there is an exciting flurry of Seattle awesomeness in the visual arts community. I can't mention all of the wonderful things that I saw but here's a short re-cap:

1. I got to meet my encaustic hero Janet Nechama Miller. Star struck!

2. Johnny Wow! has an unexpected new series of kitties made with the new aqua promarkers I'd been curious about. So Cute!

3. I bumped into Nate Stottrup who will be teaching 2 free printmaking demonstrations on August 20th in the Daniel Smith Classroom & Gallery Space at the Seattle store. Cool Coincidence!

4. The Orange Crush show at Punch Gallery was both hilarious & awesome. There was a shark in a tank of Orange Crush soda. I'm just saying.

5. The Steven Barrett Salon hosted the first show artist Cara Granger Astorquia & husband Jason Astorquia have had together. It was a beautiful & harmonious pairing of work.

6. I fell in love with a piece of work by Zak Alexander.

7. The show at the Flatcolor Gallery was inspiring, as well, featuring art by BIGFOOT, CHIP7, EL KAMINO!

8. The Azuma Gallery
is exhibiting a selection of Ginny Conrow's porcelain pieces. The glaze work she is doing is remarkable!

Stay inspired & Hopefully I will see you next month with more goodies for artists that I can share!

The Joys of Art Journaling

Local artist of many talents, Liesel Lund, will be holding a one-day workshop at Daniel Smith Artists' Materials Seattle Store on the topic of "Mixed Media: The Joys of Journaling." You can see more of her beautiful art journals here.

Art journaling is a wonderful way to express your creativity. Both beginning and experience artists can benefit from this wonderful medium. If you are new to art, it is an easy and delightful way to begin your artistic journey. For the experienced artist this is a great tool to enhance your art and help prevent burn out. In this intro to art journaling you'll make your own unique art journal and get to explore a variety of mixed media art techniques. Learn how the art journal is perfect for nourishing creativity and a variety of ways you can use it in your everyday life.
Workshop will be held on Sunday August 15th 11am-4pm at Daniel Smith Seattle Store 4150 1st Ave South Seattle, WA 98124. Call the Seattle Store to register, limited space is available (206)223-9599. $75 tuition.

Creating Fine Line and Detail Using Encaustics

Local Encaustic Artist, Mindi Katzman, creates interesting images that appear to blur the line between traditional encaustic process and the details usually achieved in paintings. Mindi will share her unique process in her upcoming FREE demonstration at the Daniel Smith Seattle Store: Fine Line and Detail Saturday August 14th. 2 sessions: 11am-12pm & 1:30pm-2:30-pm.

Encaustic users will learn that painting with wax medium does not mean giving up attention to fine detail or brilliant color. Learning about creating fine lines and details in encaustics will help artists with a representational or abstract approach. Add a whole other dimension to your work using a hot pen tool (similar to a caligraphy pen). You will also learn that you can cover a lot of surface with not a lot of paint and that buying high quality paint and great colors does pay off.

Daniel Smith wants to know: Have you ever used encaustics before? What is the main thing you wish you could do with encaustics that you haven't learned how to do yet?

We look forward to seeing you there on Saturday August 14th!

What is Shellac Printmaking?

Local Artist Joan Mamelok (see her beautiful work above) will answer this very interesting question as she teaches you how to achieve results with a shellac printmaking technique.
Learn to create beautiful dry point prints on shellac plates. You will use drawing and scratching techniques that allow you to transfer rich images on to paper. You will also discuss laying plates to make complex and richer images. Joan's workshop still has spaces available so call now to register 206-223-9599. Workshop will be held at the Seattle Daniel Smith store on Thursday August 12th 1pm-4pm. $40.
